WebThe East Texas region is primarily a thick forest of pines, hence the name Pineywoods! This woodland is part of a larger forest that extends into Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. The terrain is rolling with lower, wetter bottomlands that grow hardwood trees such as elm, mesquite and ash. WebPineywoods Wildlife — Texas Parks & Wildlife Department Pineywoods Wildlife Woodpeckers and 100 other species of birds inhabit the area. Woodpeckers nest in holes or “cavities” they peck into old pine trees, telephone poles or posts. Hollow logs or trees can also be home. Wood is very hard so it takes a long time to peck a hole in a tree.
